Nicolet College Officials Excited About Dual Enrollment

Nicolet College officials are pleased with an announcement last week by Governor Walker that more than $3 million dollars is now available to help students take college-level credits while still in high school.

It's called "dual enrollment". Nicolet College President Dr. Richard Nelson says students who have some credits in hand when they enroll are more likely to finish their degrees. He says another reason is practical...

"....the credits they earn in high school are credits they don't have to pay for here. Even though we have the Promise program which covers the tuition and fees not covered by grants, that only goes for four semesters. So if the students can come in with credits then they can take lighter loads when they are here and do better in their courses...."

The Nicolet Promise helps students within the district by paying the portion of their education not covered by grants. Nelson says they have models worked out with each in high school in the Nicolet district. Nelson says the program will help students get a practical push by having to stay in college less time and with less cost, but he says they are also more motivated to finish...

"....we know that students who come to college with some credit for college already in hand are more likely to complete their degree...."

Vice-President of Student Affairs Kate Ferrel says they are working to immediately implement the extra funds so students can get credit at Nicolet. She outlines some of the common courses taken...

"....especially in the area of(medicine), business courses, some will students will take culinary math, accounting, other students take anatomy and physiology...."

Farrel says they are working with the state to find out the fastest way to implement the dual track program. She says Nicolet already has a dual mission with technical and university programs. Ferrel says students should first talk to their high school guidance counselors and if they want more information they can call the Welcome Center at Nicolet College or go to their webpage.
