A local Democratic leader says the unusual manner the party has nominated a presidential ticket this year because of COVID-19 has had many positives.

Vilas County Democratic Party Chair Jane Nicholson says the convention this week has been intriguing, and even virtually, the convention has become a model for the future...

"It seems incredibly wise and rich in terms of what's unfolded. It's a way of conserving certain kinds of energies and at the same time being able to include many more people..."

She feels the idea of "We The People" was a smart theme for the party. She says the opening night's featured speakers of Bernie Sanders, Republican John Kasich and Michelle Obama created an arc of viewpoints that reflected the party well.

Nicholson says the Joe Biden-Kamala Harris ticket is one that could unite the party...

"What I've observed is a lot of enthusiasm. I think it's going to be a true 'umbrella' team. And I will say the promises and the possibilities that we've been hoping to offer to the country and to all the voters is really going to be established through this ticket..."

Nicholson feels the state nomination process was much improved with the virtual presentation, eliminating what she called 'ballyhooing " and the states gave a deep sense of who they are in the nation.

She felt it was sad that coronavirus took away Milwaukee's place in the convention. She says Milwaukee represents innovation and struggle and captures the American situation right now.
