State Representative Rob Swearingin accepted an award in Rhinelander Tuesday.
The pro-business group Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, or WMC…gives out the Working for Wisconsin award…to legislators that vote with what the group calls the pro-jobs position.
Jason Culotta, Director of Tax and Transportation Policy, explains that WMC looked at votes on 33 pieces of legislation.
“In this year there’s a series of 30 votes that range on things like income and property tax, to regulatory reform, to adopting the iron mining statute, to workforce training.”
Swearingin got a hundred percent on his WMC scorecard.
He said the state is moving in the right direction, citing the state’s 5.7 percent jobless rate in June.
“And so I think clearly that’s an indicator, that the governor is doing his job and that we’re doing our job as Assembly Republicans. It’s a challenge, especially up here in the Northwoods, is to keep those manufacturers coming.”
Most Northwoods counties still have significantly higher unemployment rates, though many did fall in June. Iron County maintains the second highest in the state at 11.2 percent.
WMC is giving its Working for Wisconsin award to 59 state representatives and 17 state senators, all of whom are Republican, including Senator Tom Tiffany of Hazelhurst and Representative Mary Czaja of Irma.
