OC Board Objects To Shoreland Zoning Change

The Oneida County Board Tuesday told the legislature's Joint Finance Committee they don't approve of inserting a non-budget change in shoreland zoning rules into the on-going state budget process.

Earlier this month, a  motion was added to the budget bill by Senator Tom Tiffany to place all shoreland zoning at the state minimum standards, which often are less restrictive than local ordinances. That move has drawn the ire of the Wisconsin Counties Association, and other groups, saying it shouldn't be put in the last minute without public debate.

The vote was 14-4 asking Joint Finance to kill that provision.

Seven members of the public, including the leaders of two county lake associations spoke against the state motion. Kari Zambon from Lake Thompson asked the board to pass the resolution....

"....look at this and realize what a serious impact this could have on our county, our future, our children's future..."

Town of Crescent resident Karl Fate...

"....we will not be able to protect the quality of these resources if we are handcuffed to minimum state standards..."

Supervisor Scott Holowinski says his research found it would still allow the county some leeway, but could impact other provisions of state shoreland zoning. But most supervisors felt the matter was one more effort by the state to take away local control of issues and was a non-budget item placed at the last minute in a budget bill.

Tiffany said last week it creates uniformity in the rules.
