Phelps Maple Syrup Fest Saturday

It's going to be a sweet weekend in Phelps as the 8th annual Phelps Maple Syrup Fest comes to the Vilas county community.

The festival celebrates one of Wisconsin's leading products as Chamber of Commerce Director Celeste Hendrickson...

"...The event is centered at the Phelps school You can browse through 60 different vendors at our arts and crafts show. Try out some maple treats and honey treats at the maple cafe. New this year we have a kids pancake eating contest at 8:30 at the school. That should be fun. We're always looking forward to who wins the judging contest. A lot of local producers put in a jar of their syrup..."

Hendrickson agrees that the day long event Saturday highlights the work done by Northwoods producers...

"..We see a lot of people who want to learn more about making maple syrup. how they can make their own. That's why we started offering educational classes. We have maple syrup making 101 and beekeeping 101..."

Honey is also part of the day's activities. The day includes maple tours and tree-tapping demonstrations, a kids pancake eating contest and maple treats and family activities. Alice in Dairyland will attend and be a judge in the maple syrup contest. The event runs at the Phelps school from 8-4 Saturday.
