Polls Open In Northern Wisconsin Congressional Voting

Northern Wisconsin is hosting its second election with in-person voting during the COVID-19 health emergency on Tuesday.

In a special election, voters will select the replacement to Congressman Sean Duffy, who resigned last year.

Republican Tom Tiffany, a state Senator from Minocqua, faces Democrat Tricia Zunker, the Wausau School Board President, in the race.

Last month, the administration of Gov. Tony Evers said it considered moving the election, but decided to stick with the date.

We asked Evers on Monday how he would define success in this round of in-person voting.

“Success for me would be to have not only poll workers being protected and doing the things they need to do to be protected, but also the people that are voting – six feet apart, all the things that are important. Wearing masks, if you feel comfortable doing that, I think that’s an extraordinarily strong suggestion on my part,” Evers said.

As of last week, more than 107,000 voters in Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District had requested an absentee ballot. About 60 percent of the ballots had already been returned.

Polls remain open until 8 p.m. Tuesday, after which WXPR will provide coverage of the results.
