Joe Biden is the projected winner Wisconsin in the 2020 race for the White House, but President Donald Trump wants a recount.
The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin said anxious voters need more patience as the process plays out.
Wisconsin's unofficial results saw Biden leading Trump by only 20,000 votes when the race was called by several news organizations yesterday.
Debra Cronmiller, executive director of the group, said if the president follows through on his recount request, it could only occur after the results are certified by the state elections commission, which won't happen right away.
"Right now, we're just having projected results," Cronmiller clarified. "And the Wisconsin Elections Commission will have to certify those results by the Nov. 17, at which point in time a recount can happen. And then ultimately, the Wisconsin Elections Commission can certify that recount."
And for anyone worried about the integrity of the process, she added Wisconsin's elections are very transparent.
She noted many attorneys and election monitors were on hand for routine observation of this year's vote and found no irregularities to raise concerns.
Cronmiller said past recounts in Wisconsin, including the 2016 vote, have only swayed the vote total in the low hundreds. She said that's the expectation for 2020, should a recount go through.
"I would offer that things will change, if at all, extremely little," Cronmiller contended.
In 2016, then-candidate Trump edged Hillary Clinton by nearly the same vote total as the current faceoff in Wisconsin. In that instance, the Green Party presidential nominee asked for the recount in the Badger State.
