Potawatomi Tribe Asks Govenor To Make Casino Decision

en.wikipedia.org

A tribal spokesperson supports a Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel editorial last weekend asking Governor Walker to make a decision soon on a new $800 million casino complex in Kenosha county.

The Menominee Nation is requesting a new casino be built at the former Dairyland Greyhound Park. While nine Wisconsin tribes back the proposal, two do not: the Ho-Chunk tribe and the Forest County Potawatomi Community. Both tribes have gambling facilities off reservation.  The proposed Kenosha complex would be in direct competition with the lucrative Potawatomi casino in Milwaukee.

The newspaper editorial wondered why Governor Walker asked the federal government for a six-month delay beyond the one-year deadline of August 23. The state's Governor is given the power to make the final decision. Walker says he needs more time to analyze the data. Election date for the Governor's race is November 4.

Potawatomi spokesperson George Ermert says the tribe would like the Governor to stick to a promise he made...

".....this opinion piece from the Journal-Sentinel is essentially saying that the Governor needs to stick to the criteria that (Gov.. Walker) set from day one. He said he would only approve a new casino if there was local support, consensus among all 11 tribes in Wisconsin and it did not lead to a net increase in gaming...."

The Lac Du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa would also like to open an off-reservation casino near the Illinois border at Shullsberg.
