Tuesday, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection’s (DATCP)Data Privacy and Security Advisory Committee will hold its next meeting on identifying better ways to protect your data.

This meeting is being held at the Marathon County Public Library, and will include a period for public comments to be submitted to the committee.

Trade and Consumer Protection Administrator Lara Sutherlin says this committee has been meeting since last October across the state. She says data privacy should be a big concern..

"Your data is stored and shared and sold and resold with the purchase of pretty much any good or service. We are wanting to take a look at the framework of Wisconsin's regulations in this state..."

Sutherlin says Wisconsin has a lot of regulations but there's no specific law surrounding consumer data. She says there's one law concerning breaches of data, but it has few teeth and was written in 2006. She says in 2019, data storage market was $56 billion  and by 2024 it will grow to $144 billion.

She says this committee is taking on that issue. She says it's not as simple as consumers vs. businesses...

"Businesses want to keep the data as secure as possible and they also want to collect data and target their marketing and understand the consumers they're serving. Consumers want to know what kind of privacy their entitled to and whether their data can be removed from their businesses or if that data is secure, where it's kept there.."

Sutherlin says they want to hear what are the expectations regarding data privacy, what type of security they expect, and the role they expect government to play.

A final report will be sent to Governor Evers this coming summer. The meeting Tuesday at the Marathon County Public Library community room begins at 9:00 a.m.
