Republicans Pleased With Proposed Education Funding

en.wikipedia.org

Northwoods Republicans were pleased with the final numbers presented by the legislature's Joint Finance Committee as they ended the education funding portion of the next budget.

State Senator Tom Tiffany of Hazelhurst said they restored more than $200 million dollars in previously-cut support, including and additional $100 dollars in the second year of the program. He says they added more than $8 million dollars to help fund the smallest enrollment schools, and  added more than $5 million to help fund busing in rural areas. Tiffany sits on the budget-writing committee.

In the Assembly, Representative Rob Swearingen of Rhinelander chaired a task force last year looking at rural school issues. He said Wednesday morning he was pleased...

"....and I was very excited this morning to find out that several of the proposals we pitched to Speaker Robin Vos and Governor Walker actually survived the budget process in terms of the Rural Schools Task Force. Good stuff last night...."

Democrats were not happy that money would go to expand the private school voucher program. The expansion would be modeled after the state's open enrollment system, and increases the amount of per-pupil aid for taxpayer-funded voucher schools to $7,200 per K-8 student and $7,800 per high school student.
