Rhinelander Deer Hunt Returns In September

Rhinelander is hosting another bow-and-arrow antlerless deer hunt within the city limits beginning next month. The common council approved the action Monday.

The bow season will open on September 12th and run until January 3, 2021.  There will be interruptions in the season because of other DNR hunts such as the gun-deer hunt.

Deputy City Clerk Mary Stoll details what hunters need to do...

"We'll need a copy of their hunting license, copy of the driver's license, and a map of the land that they wish to hunt on. They will have to go through a background check. The police department will also look at the land they want to hunt on to make sure it can be hunted safely..."

Antlered deer may only be hunted and harvested if the hunter has their own state-issued buck tag. All hunters must use a stand elevated at least 6 feet off the ground. Hunters must have a valid DNR bow license and must bring their carcass tag upon applying for the program. Hunters must notify the City Hall within 48 hours that you have harvested a deer. The harvested deer are registered with the DNR as normal.

The deadline for applications is September 11. In past years, about 300 wooded acres within the city were authorized for bow-and-arrow hunting.

The hunt began in 2006 after a large deer herd was becoming a nuisance within the city. The hunt had been halted at times because the deer population had dropped to low levels.

Contact the city clerk's office if you need more information.
