RHINDELANDER--Rhinelander-Oneida County and several other Northwoods airports have picked up money through the federal CARES relief act.
Rhinelander picked up $1.1 million, while airports in Crandon, Arbor Vitae, Eagle River, Manitowish Waters, Land O' Lakes, Tomahawk, Park Falls and Phillips picked up between $20,000 and $30,000.
Rhinelander Airport Director Matthew Leitner says the money is intended for capital projects and loss of revenue, so he thinks some of it will be used to complete the renovation work at the terminal.
He says the heavy loss of enplanements across the country is also being felt in Rhinelander...
"So we'll certainly be putting that to good use because our parking revenue has dropped precipitously over the last month. We're, of course, not alone. Airports throughout the state and country are seeing decreases on the order of 95 percent when it comes to passenger enplanements and traffic..."
The FAA will use a streamlined application and grant-agreement process to make funding immediately available. The funds will be available as soon as the airport sponsor executes a grant agreement.
The federal allocation is $10 billion in emergency resources.
