A Northwoods county treasurer is reminding property taxpayers the second installment of their payments are due by the end of the month. Changes in the U.S. Post Office might have something to do with it.
Property owners are given the option to pay those taxes in two payments, but the payment must be received by the county no later than July 31.
Oneida County Treasurer Kris Ostermann says many people wait until the last minute to pay, but they have to consider the U.S. Mail isn't moving at the speed it once did...
"....a lot of the county treasurers are asking the public to think about mailing early because we found that the mail seems to be taking longer to get to us...."
Tax payments must be postmarked by July 31 and received in the treasurer's office by August 7 or they will accrue a 10 and- a- half percent penalty and interest charge for late payment. Penalty and interest will continue to accrue at a rate of 1.5 percent per month until the bill is paid in full.
