Last week the City of Crandon had a ribbon cutting ceremony for it’s new, two mile pedestrian and bicycle trail that was paid for by a combination of two federal grants.
Stacy Karcz is the grant writer and Crandon Zoning Administrator. She said the grant is an 80/20 match and the original engineering plans came up with a total cost of just over a million dollars to construct the trail. She says that would have required Crandon to come up with $200,000 which the city didn't have. Karcz then successfully applied for a Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Grant to compliment the awarded Transportation Enhancement Grant and the city went ahead with the construction.
The trail was designed by Becher-Hoppe and Associates of Wausau and connects from the Crandon school, which is west on State Highway 8, to the Wolf River State Trail on Pioneer Street. Karcz hopes the trail will become a starting point for other new connecting trails.
