A large federal investment has been awarded to the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa to help improve water infrastructure.

USDA Rural Development Director for Wisconsin Frank Frassetto says that agency is essentially a large bank for rural America and they provide loan, loan guarantees and grants in rural America.

Frassetto details the award In Lac du Flambeau...

"...This is a wastewater treatment system, an upgrade to it. The whole idea behind it as these infrastructure systems get older they need to be upgraded. What we're trying to do is prevent groundwater leaks and the project will also improve service to more than 540 residential users and almost 70 businesses and other tribal operations..."

The funding total was about $5.3 million in the form of loans and grants and Indian Health Service put in $2.8 million of that total along with other sources.

Three Wisconsin communities received more than $12 million, as part of a $392 million dollar federal investment to improve rural water and wastewater structure in 42 states. Those system upgrades are in places with populations under 10,000.

In 2018, Congress included $5,2 billion for USDA loans and grants, up nearly 5 times from previous funding .
