A two month part-time administrative assistant vacancy in the Vilas County Tourism & Publicity office was approved this week after committee members rejected a full time replacement. This happened even though the 2019 county budget funded a full time person.
Asked about the work load, publicity director Cindy Burzinski favored a full- time person telling the committee “I've been working that position for two months and the person will never be looking for things to do.”
The committee got bogged down debating the relationship of the office with the 11 individual community chambers of commerce in Vilas County. Supervisor Jay Verhulst suggested local chambers take the lead in some areas.
The value of the county Vacation Guide was questioned by supervisor Holly Tomlanovich, saying she just types in a destination online and gets all the information she needs, pointing out the Guide went from 50,000 copies down to 30,000.
Supervisor Carolyn Ritter agreed social media is increasing but there is a population that prefers something they can hold in their hands, Ritter moved to fill the position full time which was defeated 3-2 and then moved to fill it part time for 28 hours per week which was approved 3-2.
The position will be posted for 30 days.
