Vilas County Ride/Walk Honors Volunteer Don Gillum

Great Headwaters Trails

A long-time Great Headwaters Trails volunteer who died in 2016 will be the focus of a memorial ride Saturday beginning in Conover.

The Don Gillum Memorial Bike and Hike event is set for Saturday.

Great Headwaters Trails President Jeff Currie says the bike and hike will benefit others....

"....His widow, Sandy, suggested a memorial ride would be a great event and we agreed. She had also talked with Relay for Life of the Northwoods, they were on board with it also. So we have this event on Saturday, July 21 that honors Don's Memory and will benefit Relay for Life of the Northwoods...."

Registration can be done online at their website or at the event beginning at 8 a.m. The opening ceremony is at 8:45 a.m. with the bike/hike at 9:15. Currie says the family-oriented event will start in Conover’s Community Park and give all participants a chance to walk or cycle a part of or all of the new trail. The event will include the dedication of a bench in Don’s memory, and lunch and prize drawings. He says hikers will be transported closer to the bench before the dedication.

Currie says they still have two miles left to build on the Conover-Phelps trail and more work and donations are needed...

"...We sent out letters to all the people who have property along the route of the last two miles to let them know we'll be out there, staking what we think is is the best route the trail should take into(Phelps). So within a couple of weeks they will see us out there staking, so they should see what the route is going to be..."
