Well Water Safety a Concern Following Flooding in Northern Wisconsin

Wisconsin DNR

In light of the recent flooding in northern Wisconsin, well water safety has become a cause for concern. Floodwaters and runoff can affect private wells and people with flooding should assume their well is contaminated. DNR private water field supervisor, Marty Nessman says people in the affected areas should have their wells checked before using the water again.

“Well, any well that had floodwaters that went over the top of the well could certainly be impacted, and people should just look for a change in the color, odor or taste of their water.”

Nessman says wells that were underwater should be flushed and then checked for any bacteria by a professional lab.

He also says those in the affected areas should stop drinking their tap water until the well has been checked for any harmful bacteria.
