Winter Heating Help, Winter Utility Moratorium This Week

The early blast of winter gives an opportunity for Wisconsin Public Service to remind customers about heating assistance and the winter utility moratorium.

Spokesperson Matt Cullen says energy assistance applications now are being accepted by the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP).

"....we would like to remind our customers to see if they are eligible to receive energy assistance as colder temperatures and the winter heating season begins. Energy assistance benefits come at no charge and they cover heating and electric cost and emergency needs...."

Cullen says anyone applying for energy assistance must first contact the designated county agency, often the county Department of Social Services. He says there's a list of energy assistance agencies in the region on the WPS website.

November 1, customers currently disconnected from utility service become eligible to have their utilities reconnected as Wisconsin's Winter Moratorium on disconnections begins.

State law doesn't allow for disconnections until April 15 for unpaid bills. But Cullen says customers should contact WPS about making arrangements to pay the bills...

"....the important thing is if a customer is concerned, if they've had difficulty paying bills, please reach out to us. Our employees are willing to make every effort to assist them, to offer payment arrangements and to help them in the process of energy assistance to they can stay connected...."

WPS has a toll-free number at 800-450-7260 for service or online at wisconsinpublicservice.com
