Winter Moratorium On Utility Disconnections To End Next Week

en.wikipedia.org Kristoferb

Next week, state utilities can disconnect gas and electric service from customers who are far behind in their bills. The winter moratorium law in Wisconsin forbids disconnections during the winter months but ends in April. This year the moratorium ends on April 16.

Wisconsin Public Service spokesperson Matt Cullen says past-due customers should make contact soon to keep service....

"..If they are carrying past-due balances, they should contact us now to work with us to establish a payment arrangement, or coming to an agreement on a minimum payment option so they can stay connected to our system....."

Cullen says customers who have not made payments since November 1 are at greatest risk. Cullen says WPS wants customers to be connected...

"The most important thing is for customers to reach out to us if they are having difficult paying their energy bills. We can talk with them about a minimum payment option or a payment arrangement. Customers behind on energy bills are reminded they can check their eligibility for home energy assistance. Those funds are provided in a one-time payment by the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance program...."

To find out if you qualify for Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance (WHEAP), their number is 1-866-HEATWIS (432-8947) or visit http://www.homeenergyplus.wi.gov/
