Winter Visitors Flock To Ski and Snowmobile Trails

Joe Ross

There wasn’t enough snow in Eagle River to build its famous ice castle this year, but there is enough to make winter recreation enthusiasts happy.

Good snow conditions and low gas prices mean tourists are coming north to enjoy winter sports. Kim Emerson, Executive Director of the Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center, says as usual over Christmas break there were many visitors out cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and, of course, snowmobiling.

“Snow mobile trails are right now in early, good riding condition right now headed toward excellent. With this cold weather, it’s gonna help set those trails more. Winter’s in full swing in Eagle River.”

Many of the lake trails have opened for snowmobiling as well. Everyone out on the lake trails is strongly advised to stay near the orange cones.

An estimated 10,000 people are expected to come over the next two weekends for the 52nd Annual Snowmobile Derby. The vintage races, featuring sleds from the 60s through 80s will be this weekend, with the World Championship Snowmobile Derby the following weekend.
