U.P. Wolf Group Questions Michigan DNR Motives

en.wikipedia.org

Michigan has joined the federal government in appealing a judge's ruling that re-classified grey wolves as an endangered species. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell ruled in December that wolves in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan should not have been removed from the endangered list. Michigan's D-N-R said residents who have to live with the wolves deserve a full range of tools to manage them, while keeping the population sustainable.

Nancy Warren is the Executive Director and Great Lakes Regional Coordinator for the National Wolf Watcher Coalition. She says she wasn't surprised by the appeal but was upset with some of the language. She says the Michigan DNR said they lost their ability to control wolves that threaten humans, but Warren says that is not the case...

?

"....(Michigan) DNR always had the authority to remove any animals that pose any threat to humans. We have not had any attacks anywhere in the Great Lakes region as far as causing any deaths...."

Michigan had a wolf hunt in the Upper Peninsula in 2013. Wisconsin had three annual wolf hunts which were wiped out by the judge's ruling -- along with permission for farmers to shoot the animals if they're maiming livestock or damaging crops.
