7th Congressional District

Just six days after losing a northern Wisconsin congressional election to Republican Tom Tiffany, Democrat Tricia Zunker announced she will run for the seat again this fall.

Tiffany beat Zunker by 14 points last Tuesday in a special election for the open seat.

“I’m standing up for what I believe in. I invite you to join me in the arena. This November, let’s dare greatly and win this seat,” Zunker said in a video.

Northern Wisconsin is hosting its second election with in-person voting during the COVID-19 health emergency on Tuesday.

In a special election, voters will select the replacement to Congressman Sean Duffy, who resigned last year.

Republican Tom Tiffany, a state Senator from Minocqua, faces Democrat Tricia Zunker, the Wausau School Board President, in the race.

Last month, the administration of Gov. Tony Evers said it considered moving the election, but decided to stick with the date.

A two-term state Senator will face the president of the Wausau School Board in May’s special election in the 7th Congressional District.

Sen. Tom Tiffany (R-Minocqua) won his primary election against Jason Church on Tuesday, while Tricia Zunker (D-Wausau) easily defeated Lawrence Dale on the Democratic side.

The winner will replace former Congressman Sean Duffy, who resigned in September.

Zunker got nearly 90 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary, but she told WXPR she’s been focusing on the general election for a long time.

Attorneys for Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos argue their client is immune from civil legal action. The powerful Republican is refusing to testify in the federal lawsuit over the drawing of state political boundary maps. Democrats asked the federal panel of judges to force Vos to sit for a deposition and turn over documents related to the case. They say the boundaries he helped draw were illegally gerrymandered. That case is likely to be heard in the lower federal court this summer.

An advocacy group for Social Security and Medicare says their officials were surprised when they ran a report showing Wisconsin's 7th Congressional district has one of the highest impacts from Social Security in the nation.

The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare's Dan Adcock says they took numbers from the Social Security Administration and broke them down by congressional district. Adcock says, not surprisingly, that districts in Florida topped the list, but the district that covers much of northern and central Wisconsin was very high up the list....
