Hurley School District

The Hurley school district is closing for several weeks because of the coronavirus.

Superintendent Kevin Genisot announced the schools will be closed from Monday, March 16 through Monday, April 13.

Genisot said all activities will be canceled. He says there will be no practices or general school use of the facility in any capacity.

The Oneida County Health Department has issued information about the COVID-19, or coronavirus.

Since being identified in late 2019, Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread to more than 100 countries worldwide, and has been classified as a pandemic by the World Health Organization.

Rhinelander Mayor Chris Frederickson has cancelled Saturday’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Rhinelander.

In a press release, he cited statewide guidance from Gov. Tony Evers on large gatherings during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Also on Friday, the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce cancelled the RACC Business Spotlight at Rhinelander High School, scheduled for Mar. 21.

League of Women Voters

A series of candidate forums planned by the League of Women Voters set for this month have been cancelled due to the Covid-19 situation.

The League had planned candidate forums on March 16 and March 18. The Rhinelander City Council (Districts 3 and 7) Forum was to be held on Monday, March 16, at the Rhinelander District Library. The Oneida County Board (District 11) Forum was to be held onWednesday, March 18, at the Crescent Town Hall.

Storm Spotter Class Cancelled Due To Covid-19

Another cancellation due to the coronavirus.

The National Weather Service Storm Spotter Class scheduled for March 17 in Rhinelander is cancelled due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus.

Oneida County Emergency Management reports the National Weather Service will offer online alternative arrangements for their storm spotter classes this season. Officials say CDC guidance continues to suggest that social distancing can be effective at limiting the overall spread of the virus and that was cited as a reason to cancel to protect attendees.

Boys and girls basketball playoff games in Wisconsin will not take place. 

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association determined all remaining games of the State Girls Basketball Tournament will be canceled.  The boys basketball sectional finals and the State Tournament have also been called off.

It’s in response to the evolving concerns over the spread of COVID-19.

WIAA leaders say they regret the lost opportunity for teams and players that have worked to achieve their goals, and also for the communities that have supported them throughout the year.

Pacific Air Forces

Ascension Wisconsin is implementing temporary visitor restrictions in both inpatient and outpatient settings to minimize disease transmission, specifically the COVID-19 virus.

Ascension spokesperson Tom Weaver says the restrictions are similar to times of heavy influenza numbers....

Crandon School District Facebook

The Crandon School District will close Friday, March 13, to deep clean and disinfect the school.  A post on the district’s website says the Crandon School District is trying to be proactive.  The decision came after recent news about Wisconsin Universities closing campuses and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction releasing information about precautionary measures.  Crandon School District leaders also looked at their own recent attendance data.

Centers For Disease Control and Prevention

Health departments in the Northwoods have plans in place should the coronavirus outbreak reach the Northwoods and spreads.

Assistant Director at the Vilas County Health Department Tammi Boers says there have been no reports of anyone sick with the coronavirus in Vilas county, but none-the-less they have plans in place in case there is a breakout. She says they first used the plan in 2009 with the H1N1 virus.

She says they're updating the plan based on the Centers For Disease Control recommendations..

Update: 3/10 4:30 p.m. A third case of Covid-19 was reported, the second in Dane county. This information came in after this report was filed.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has been updating the public by video conference concerning the coronavirus, and Tuesday's program including information on the latest cases.

A patient in Pierce county has become the second confirmed case, two others in Dane county..

The School District of Rhinelander has cancelled class trips that were scheduled to go to France and Germany next week due to the coronavirus.

In a media release Friday morning, Superintendent Kelli Jacobi said the school checked with Centers For Disease control guidelines and State Department alerts.

She says they're concerned that everyone on the trips could be exposed to the virus, but also could get involved in a rapidly changing situation and unpredictable circumstances, challenges returning home and possible problems getting access to health care in those nations.

Parents of Rhinelander students have gotten notices outlining what the school district is doing to keep the Coronavirus and other respiratory diseases at bay.

School district nurse Kerri Schmidt says they brought together local stakeholders to determine a course of action..
