A $2.5 million federal grant awarded to Michigan will be used to address health care staffing shortages in the state’s rural communities.

Michigan’s Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity says the grant will support the addition of more than 430 new health care workers over the next four years.

The agency will lead MiREACH, a network of employer-led collaboratives, to identify targeted health care occupations based on employer demand and feedback.

Michiganders without health insurance have a rare opportunity to sign up for coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

Over the next few months, Aspirus will own an additional seven hospitals, 21 physician clinics, and air and ground medical transport services across the Northwoods.

Aspirus Health Care announced Tuesday it signed an agreement to acquire these Ascension sites.

In the last six months, Marshfield Clinic has expanded its presence in the Northwoods.

In July, it opened its newly built hospital in Minocqua.

In August, it took over control of Flambeau Hospital in Park Falls.

To support the care in the region, Marshfield Clinic is now offering its own ambulance service.

This won’t be the type that responds to emergency calls. It will be used to transfer patients.
