In the late 1990s, when Patrick Taylor moved back to his Merrill hometown, he bought a house on the water.

It was one of more than a hundred homes on a mill pond created by the old Ward paper mill dam.

“It was a great area for duck hunting,” Taylor said.

Other people on the water fished, swam, or canoed.

Then, Taylor learned the water was about to disappear.

“The day after we closed on the house, they announced the removal of the dam,” he said in an interview this week.

In Merrill, candidates in four of the five targeted city council districts turned their petitions in at Tuesday's deadline, according to city clerk Bill Heideman.

In District 1 incumbent Paul Russell will face Becky Meyer. District 5 voters will choose between John Van Lieshout and Shannon Collins. Rob Norton (I) and Eric Dayton vie for the District 7 seat. In District 8 the ballot will feature challenger Steve Sabatke and Tim Meehean. Heideman says the ballot in District 6 will only have the name of Dave Sukow on it, but residents will still be allowed to write in a candidate.

Maple syrup production in northern Wisconsin is wrapping up for the season.  For small producers a fickle weather pattern meant it wasn’t a great season in terms of syrup quantity.  But for larger producers who use more high-tech systems, it was still an above average year.  And the reasons behind these sap dynamics are still somewhat of a mystery.

The day I visit Maple Hollow Farm near Merrill Wisconsin is muddy and cool – a typical backdrop for a process that takes place only in spring, when the sap is running.
