Woman rescued from Merrill apartment fire

A woman was rescued from an apartment fire early Tuesday morning in Merrill.

Firefighters responded shortly after 2:30 a.m. to the apartments on east 2nd street.

Dispatchers told them a person was trapped on the second floor.

Merrill firefighters quickly found the woman at an upstairs window.

They used a ground ladder to rescue her.

Crews then worked to put out the fire that spread to the apartment building next door.

The fire was eventually contained, but only after significant damage to the buildings.

No people were hurt. One dog died.

After investigation, the Merrill Fire Department says the fire likely started in the upper stairwell of the apartment.

They don’t believe it was set on purpose.

The official cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
