Rhinelander School Forest Gets Top Award

The School Forest Advisory Committee for the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom (CAVOC) in Rhinelander was recently presented with the “Chairman’s Special Achievement” award from the Lumberjack Resource Conservation and Development Council as part of their 2020 Sustainable Forestry Award program.

This award is presented to for outstanding contributions in promoting good forest stewardship through education.

We spoke with chairperson for The School Forest Committee Bob LeFebvre about the award...

The School Forest Advisory Committee for the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom (CAVOC) in Rhinelander was recently presented with the “Chairman’s Special Achievement” award from the Lumberjack Resource Conservation and Development Council as part of their 2020 Sustainable Forestry Award program. This award is presented to for outstanding contributions in promoting good forest stewardship through education.

A spokesperson for the Forest Advisory Committee, Bob Lefebvre, says this school forest has a distinction.... 

"...SDR has the largest school forest in Wisconsin at 1,200 acres. We have a forestry management program with good forestry practices. We involve the students with a variety of activities at CAVOC and in other parts of the school forest..."

Among the othe programs, they have a pre-K-12 Environmental Sciences curriculum. Lefebvre says any teacher in the district can come out CAVOC and use the materials. CAVOC has been the site of many events, including outdoor recreational activities.
