May is Mental Health Awareness Month and a spokesperson says veterans have new tools to help.

To help reduce the risk of infection at the facility, the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain asks that veterans use VA’s online resources for routine or non-urgent mental health care and questions.

Amy Fowler is the local recovery coordinator at the Center and for the community-based outreach clinics. She says each person has unique needs and they have a wide array of professionals that provide treatment.

"We are doing a lot of video connected appointments right now to continue the social distancing but also creative ways to stay connected...."

Fowler says they're using a variety of electronic media so veterans can find help, including a daily peer-support group call from 1-2 p.m.....

"Share ideas of how they're coping with things right now as people are a little bit more isolated and a little bit more removed from others. It gives them a chance for more comradery and also stay connected with us here at the VA..."

Fowler says the veterans can get on the call one day to try it out, or they can do it every weekday. For more information go online to myhealth.va.gov
