Budget concerns may affect LUHS remodeling project

With two major remodeling projects now complete, some Lakeland Union High School Board members are fearful of squeezing finances any further for another project this year.

The Budget Committee last Wednesday heard a bleak budget projection for the next few years. On their minds is whether they have the $1.7 million of the $2.3 million needed to renovate the outdoor athletic facilities. The district spent $3 million on auditorium and other interior renovation projects the past two years.

Committee member Barb Peck thinks the half million dollar-operating deficit looming next year should give the board pause...

"....I personally cannot justify a building project when we are talking about cutting staff. I'm having a hard time putting that together..."

Peck recommended the project be put off one year. The Building and Grounds  committee meets March 28 to discuss options, including asking the community and businesses to donate towards the outdoor athletic complex.
