Expect to see volunteers and staff at Northwoods boat landings this holiday weekend.

The DNR is hosting the Fourth of July Landing Blitz. The annual effort checks boats coming in and out of waters to monitor for invasive species.

Oneida County Invasive Species Coordinator Michele Sadauskas talks about their efforts..

"....and that is why all our groups are out at the landings with AIS message golf towels and handing those out to boaters. Typically we have about 18-20 lake associations, DNR wardens, and staff from Oneida county...."

The effort is statewide. The towels are given to boaters who  Inspect boats, trailers, and equipment for attached plants, animals, and mud, drain all water from boats, motors and live wells, and anglers who never move live fish away from a landing.

Sadauskas says species moved from waterbodies will likely be in the lake forever, so the intense effort is to try to keep the lakes and rivers free of invasives.
