A new recreation area north of Rhinelander could be ready for snowshoeing this winter and have a disc golf facility ready sometime next fall.

That's the word from Pete Cody of Newbold, one of the leaders hoping to open the new Newbold Outdoor Recreation Area yet this winter...

"....at this time the stumps have been ground, the fairways are being leveled and the boardwalks are in on the snowshoe-hiking trail, so we're all set to go and we hope to recommend to the Newbold town board to open the hiking trail for snowshoeing...."

Cody says the disc golf course is rounding into shape...

"we hope to have all the fairways leveled this fall so that would get us in a position where we can drag them and seed them next spring. Hopefully by next fall, we'll be able to play disc golf...."

Cody says they were slowed a bit as they waited to get a permit through the DNR, but that has been resolved. The area is off Highway 47 north of Rhinelander on Ole Lake Road. Organizers hired some of the nation's top disc golf experts to help design the new course. The course is on 18 acres of an old landfill.
