Trees for Tomorrow in Eagle River is offering a chance for the public to help re-seed the Northwoods.
Operations Manager Cheryl Todea says the 'two-for-one' seedling program goes back a long ways, saying it started 72 years ago..
"....the purpose is to supply a sustainable wood supply for the wood and paper product industry. The wood and paper product industry was behind starting Trees for Tomorrow in 1944. This is a program that started very early on in 1945. So today we still continue this tradition of selling tree seedlings to the public. All the proceeds help Trees For Tomorrow promote sustainable management through our education programs...."
The tree seedling have been grown in its own “cell” in nutrient-rich soil. The roots are already growing in a plug of soil and Todea says they have better survival rate than bare-root seedlings because they handle a variety of sites, dry weather conditions and poor planting techniques better. She says although the seedlings are ready to plant when you receive them, they can be kept in their containers for weeks if watered regularly.
They offer Norway Pine, white and yellow birch, white spruce hybrid, and northern white cedar. Todea says it's best to pre-order the trees by calling Trees For Tomorrow, you can stop by the campus on Sheridan Street in Eagle River weekdays during business hours or they can be ordered online at trees for tomorrow .com Todea says they also can be shipped and cost $1.50 apiece.
