Another CWD-positive deer has been found in an area near the Oneida-Lincoln county line where three other deer have tested positive.
This deer tested positive this fall during the archery hunt. DNR wildlife biologist in Rhinelander Jeremy Holtz details the latest deer...
"...We're continuing to do our CWD surveillance here in a location where we've had some wild detections in southern Oneida county and northeast Lincoln county. I just received word that we're up to four positives because we have an additional deer harvested on an agricultural permit that tested positive..."
It was a 2 year old doe. Holtz says the location is close to the other known positives...
"...It is right in the area where the other three...in fact, all four have been within a less than two-mile radius if you drew a circle around it, so it's a very tight group...."
Holtz says this latest find means they're sampling in the right location but are a long way from knowing just how many deer in this area might be CWD-positive...
"..It's important that hunters continue to participate in the sampling process. Shoot the deer and bring the heads into a sampling location..."
Holtz says the deer was killed September 18 and the DNR knew the results by October 7, less than 3 weeks from the time of harvest. Holtz says if you have an agricultural damage permit it's mandatory to submit a sample to the DNR for testing.
