Great Headwaters Trails To Look At Future Plans Wednesday

Great Headwaters Trails

The annual meeting Wednesday (8-8-2018)  of Great Headwaters Trails has a backdrop of some solid work done, but more that needs to be done.

Great Headwaters Trails is an all-volunteer non-profit group developing biking and hiking trails in Vilas county. They're closing in on completing an 11 mile stretch between Conover and Phelps, with the final two miles to be built in 2019.

GHT President Jeff Currie says the annual meeting is a chance for the public to assess what has been done and plans for the future. He says they will hand out an annual report and more..

"...We'll be talking about the Conover-Phelps trail project which is only 2 miles from being completed and the River Trail project which will connect Eagle River and St. Germain and the commission has been formed with supervisors in (the town of) Cloverland, St. Germain and Eagle River...."

Currie says the next phase, connecting Eagle River to St. Germain on what's known as the River Trail, will be a more complicated project...

"..The River Trail, it looks like there's a lot of possibilities to investigate how to get a handle on that. It's a huge and tricky project because of engineering issues. But the idea of connecting Eagle River back to St. Germain and the Heart of Vilas bike trail system, 52 miles of asphalt biking and walking trail, it's a pretty big connection...."

Great Headwaters Trails annual meeting is set for 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Trees for Tomorrow campus in Eagle River. A volunteer appreciation gathering with food begins at 4:30 p.m. with the annual meeting to follow. The public is welcome to attend either, but Currie says any non-volunteers wanting to attend the meal before hand to call 715-617-0080.
