Rothschild In Lake Tomahawk Thursday About "Dark Money"

commons.wikimedia.org

The head of Wisconsin Democracy Campaign will be in the Northwoods Thursday to talk about how money is corrupting the political system.

Executive Director Matthew Rothschild is the guest speaker of the League of Women Voters Northwoods....

"...I'm going to be talking about why we need to get(dark) money out of politics. It's a big issue, especially this year. Presidential candidates from Bernie Sanders to Donald Trump have been talking about it...."

Rothschild says the most recent election involving the Wisconsin Supreme Court race is an example...

".....that's one of the issues, dark money. The Wisconsin Alliance For Reform spent $2.6 million dollars in these negative ads and we weren't entitled to find out a single dime where that money came from...."

The term "dark money" results from the 2010 U.S. Supreme Court ruling brought by the conservative group Citizens United that overturned a portion of the McCain-Feingold law which limited campaign contributions.

Wisconsin Democracy Campaign is a non-profit group that tracks money in state politics and works for campaign finance reform and other democracy reforms.

The League of Women Voters of the Northwoods invites all citizens to attend Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Sloan Community Center in Lake Tomahawk.
