WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) -- On Wednesday the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump. He's just the third president in U.S. history to officially be impeached.
During the votes on the two articles of impeachment, Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District was without representation. But the candidates for the special election are weighing in on the impeachment proceedings. "It's tough to see obviously with everything that's going on to not have representation here in northern Wisconsin. I'd love to be fighting there right now," said Republican candidate Jason Church.
And on the topic of not having representation, Democratic candidate Tricia Zunker said, "It's significant that the 7th district is not represented in today's proceedings. We deserve to have a voice in congress representing the people of Wisconsin's 7th district."
State Senator Tom Tiffany, also a Republican candidate, pointed a finger at a delayed special election date and a rush from House Democrats as to why the 7th district did not have representation.
On the other side of the aisle, Democratic candidate Lawrence Dale said, "The impeachment's investigations direct evidence is overwhelming that Trump engaged with a foreign power to interfere with the upcoming 2020 presidential election."
The candidates also weighed in on how they would have acted if they were on the chamber floor Wednesday. Zunker said, "Based on overwhelming evidence, I would be obligated to vote for the Articles of Impeachment because no one, not even the president, is above the law. I hope that now that the impeachment process is drawing to a close in the House, Congress gets back to focusing on the issues that matter to Wisconsin families."
Tiffany said he would be on the other side of the vote. "I would vote against impeachment. We saw this in Wisconsin eight years ago with the recalls, basically the same thing as impeachment, and the people of Wisconsin rejected it," Tiffany said.
Both Tiffany and Church said that Democrats have been trying impeach Trump since he was elected.
Now the impeachment process will head to the U.S. Senate for a trial. A date for that has not been set yet.
