Election Tomorrow; Northland Pines Referendum Tops Interest

Northland Pines School District

There is no statewide primary election Tuesday, but there is one ballot that will draw interest in the Northwoods.

Northland Pines voters will have a choice whether to approve a $4.6 million operating referendum.

District Administrator Scott Foster in an earlier interview with WXPR explained the funding referendum..

"...The Northland Pines School District has had a history of going to operation referendums to maintain programs and opportunities in our district. The last referendum past in 2016 is set to expire at the end of this school year. As we've had to do in the past for us to maintain our budget which impacts our programming, so we have to go back to our voters. We select to go for three years...."

Foster tells us what they will be asking...

"We estimate with the best models we have is that we're just over $5 million shortfall over the next three years. Looking at our ability to raise revenue and to make some cuts to be fair to our taxpayers we are going for three years, $4.6 million for the next three years..."

If approved, the referendum results in a $24 increase on a home valued at $100,000. There's a link to referendum information here.  There's also a scattering of primaries for towns and school boards in the region.
