School Of The Arts Registration Heading Toward Four-Day Event

Daryl Youngstrum

The next chapter in the revival of the School of the Arts gets underway later this month at UW-SP Treehaven.

Begun in 1964 by UW professor Robert Gard, the school ran each summer in Rhinelander until UW-Madison ended it's affiliation with the program. The program was revived in 2016 under the guidance of ArtStart in Rhinelander, held its first event last year and is back later this month with more offerings.

ArtStart's Development Director Melinda Childs says the response to date has been good with registrations from across Wisconsin...

"....If you haven't been to Treehaven it's a beautiful setting in the woods between Tomahawk and Rhinelander. We had School of the Arts there last year and the artists and the instructors really loved being out there inspired by nature and the quiet. It really gave it the retreat-like atmosphere and vibe and helped everyone focus on inspiration and creativity...."

Melinda Childs says registration is still open...

"....Registration is online at ArtStarts website, there's a link on our home page that you can click on. It will walk you through all the different options of classes, meals and extracurricular activities. We're hoping to promote the Northern National Arts Competition Reception. You can get your tickets for that with your School of the Arts registration. It's pretty straightforward...."

The 31st Annual Northern National Art Competition (NNAC) is set for October 1 – November 9, at Nicolet College Art Gallery. The opening reception for that is September 29 at the Nicolet College Northwoods Center. For many years the opening of the juried art show and School of the Arts were held together in July. The same format has been re-established with the September opening.

School of the Arts is set for September 27-30 at UWSP Treehaven. Contact ArtStart in Rhinelander for more information.
