Thousands of Power Outages, Some Impassable Roads from Wednesday Night Storms

Pine River Fire Department

At least 20,000 Wisconsin Public Service customers lost power during severe thunderstorms in northcentral Wisconsin on Wednesday night.

As of 6:00 a.m., Wisconsin Public Service said Marathon County had over 10-thousand customers without power.

The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office in a Facebook post urged people to drive with caution.

They said damage from the severe weather can be seen across the county, with a large number of calls about trees and powerlines in the road.

In Lincoln County, 6,700 Wisconsin Public Service customers were still without power at 6:00 a.m. The Pine River Fire Department, which covers southern Lincoln County, reported that Highway 64 was impassable in much of the area after the storm.  Highway 64 is now open again.

Farther north, more than 2,000 customers were without power in Vilas County. Xcel Energy was reporting hundreds of outages in northern Price and southern Ashland counties.

In addition to severe thunderstorms, areas of Marathon, Portage, and Chippewa counties experienced tornado warnings.
