Iron Mountain VA Medical Center Dedicates New $12.1 Million Expansion Project

Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center

The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain now has an additional 12,300 square feet.

The $12.1 million project added 11 more single-occupancy rooms for residents.

It now has more dining and recreation space and even barber shop.

John Jamison is a public affairs officer for the medical center. He says the addition also gives the facility a more home-like quality that will be especially nice once visitors are allowed again.

“They’ll be able to bring family members in there and have a place for them to meet with them and to be with their family members and to mingle amongst themselves. It will be a nice place for them to be with each other also,” said Jamison.

The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center recently opened a new addition to their Community Living Center (CLC). Cutting the ribbon to open the new space is Daniella Denboer, CLC nurse manager; looking on are, from left to right: Dale LaPalm, past Commander of the local Military Order of the Purple Heart chapter; Paul Seim, Associate Chief, Inpatient Nursing and Patient Care Services; and Mike Seda, Engineering Technician.

There’s also four hospice rooms with gardens views and beds that can be pushed out onto the patio.

The VA Medical Center serves Veterans in the Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin.

Jamison says the expansion was needed to make sure they could serve everyone that needs it.

“The only VA specific care that they can get is through us here,” said Jamison. “So it’s very important that we keep expanding and we keep moving forward to give them the care that they deserve.”

There haven’t been any patients in the new addition yet.

Jamison said there are still some finishing touches going up and it needs to be deep cleaned before anyone can use it.
