Official Says LDF Tribe Opposes Any Mining Activity In Oneida Co.

Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission

Leading up to an advisory vote next Tuesday in Oneida county, we've been hearing from people who either favor or oppose the possibility of mining in the Town of Lynne.

One of the opponents of opening a mine in Oneida county is the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. They have land within the county.

That tribe and the larger tribal organization Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council, have both passed anti-mining resolutions within their governments.

Larry Wawronowicz is the tribe's Natural Resource Director. The Town of Lynne deposit sits underneath Oneida county-owned forest land, but it also is within the ceded territories. Treaties signed in the 1800's by the tribes and the federal government allow for hunting, gathering and other rights.

An attorney for the Lac du Flambeau tribe has spoken at prior public meetings in Oneida county that they would fight any move in court, should it occur.
