Farmer's Markets are opening across the Northwoods. While there has been a worry about the food supply chain during the COVID-19 outbreak, promoters say the markets provide another source of fresh food and more.
In Rhinelander, the Hodag Farmer's Market spokesperson Jasmyn Schmidt says they're hoping to open Saturday, May 30. She says many of the vendors come back each year..
"Early in the year there's a lot of bedding plants for people who want to start a garden. Tomato plants, pepper plants. I know there's already going to be radishes and mixed greens bags. There will be maple syrup, jams and jellies..."
Schmidt also works with the Eagle River market and says they will open on Wednesday, June 3.
At the Tomahawk Main Street Farmer's Market, they're starting in mid-June every Tuesday afternoon. Spokesperson Aimee Dickrell says they will be offering meat and vegetables. Ascension Wisconsin also does an electronic banking transfer...
"We are very excited to again be able to announce our partnership with Ascension Hospital. They do a matching EBT(electronic bank transfer) program with us. Anybody who comes to our market with an EBT card, we will match dollar for dollar...."
Most markets will be making some changes in light of social distancing suggestions.
Information obtained from the Wisconsin Farmer's Market Association says the original Tomahawk Farmer's Market will begin Saturday May 30, with the Merrill market opening June 8.
Park Falls Market Facebook page says they open May 29.
The Antigo Farmer's Market opens on June 6.
The Phillips Saturday market opens June 9, with the Philips Tuesday market opens July 7.
The Catawba market opens July 11.
The Iron County market opens June 27.
