The 31st Annual Bear River Pow-Wow is set for this weekend in Lac du Flambeau.
Tribal spokesperson Brandon Thoms says the Pow-Wow is a gathering of tribal people and visitors that includes singing, dancing and food.....
"...it's basically a social gathering where storytelling and reuniting with friends or family that live outside of the area. It's almost like a homecoming..."
Thoms says this type of gathering has long historic ties, but has been known as a Pow-Wow since the 20th century...
"....in the contemporary Indian world, a Pow-Wow is a time when you can really practice your culture and acknowledge the traditions of your tribe..."
Thoms adds that the event is open to everyone. He says last year they have visitors from Germany and Japan and is open to the general public. It begins Friday night with the main activities on Saturday at the Bear River Pow-Wow Grounds in Lac du Flambeau. More information is at the George W.
