Soup For Shelter Set For November 9

nathnorthwoods.com

A key fundraiser for the Northwoods homeless shelter happens this Saturday.

The annual "Soup For Shelter" supports the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing and the shelter, Frederick Place, in Rhinelander. The shelter is used by persons from Oneida, Vilas, Lincoln, Forest and Langlade counties.

Director Tammy Modic says the event nourishes everyone involved...

?

"....at the event, people will be giving a free-will offering and get some soup donated by local restaurants. They will have a chance to mingle with board members and staff members..."

She says the meal gives participants an idea what those without shelter do each day...

?

"...by doing a minimal meal like soup and buns(it gives a participant) an idea what someone in poverty is experiencing in that type of meal..."

The Rhinelander event is Saturday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ on Larch Street at 5:00 p.m.

Frederick Places' budget is about $205, 000 per year. Modic says it costs about $40 dollars per day for each resident. She says most of the funding comes from fundraisers like Soup For Shelter. They average about 12 persons a night, with 278 persons staying overnight since 2011, with about 11 thousand shelter nights.
