A local group is hoping to spread a little hope by giving people out and about something cheerful to look at during the COVID-19 outbreak.
The past two holiday seasons, Lights of the Northwoods has held a spectacular lighting display in Rhinelander's Hodag Park. The organization raises funds and finds volunteers to string lights on trees, poles and buildings at the city's largest park. After the Christmas season, the lights are taken down.
But this year not all the lights were packed away as President Shawn Will explains...
"Members of our infrastructure committee were getting together and talking about different plans for the park and they're thinking, 'well, we still have the candy canes up at the moment because they were hard to get down with the snow. They figured it would be a good idea to light them up and let everybody know we're going to continue this grand community event..."
He says they decided to keep the candy cane decoration lit as a symbol of sticking together through the COVID outbreak. Will says the candy cane will stay lit at least until the end of Gov. Evers Safer At Home order ....
"Social distancing can also be done with a car, get out with your family outside of your home. If you're out taking a drive and you want to take a look, you can go see it. It's an 80 foot tall lit pole so it's pretty easy to see in Hodag Park..."
Shawn Will says the public can find out more information by going to the group's website at lights of the lightsofthenorthwoods.com
