DNR: Focus on Recycling

Tom Morris

The DNR is reminding people to re-commit to recycling, and seek out more ways to re-use materials.  Friday is America Recycles Day nationwide.

It’s a day that aims to call attention to how recycling is good for the environment and good for the economy.

DNR recycling spokesperson Elisabeth Olson says around 100 million dollars of re-usable materials goes into landfills every year.

“So often it’s your basic materials. We’re still seeing plastics, aluminum, paper, steel. These types of things, they’re going into our landfills.”

Olson says another way of continuing the recycling loop is to look for products that are made from recycled or post-consumer materials.

And she says even people who already recycle on a regular basis may not be aware of more unusual materials that can be recycled.

“Figure out what are the basics that are being collected. Are there any additional opportunities to drop off materials? In Wisconsin there’s been a very big push to recycle plastic bags and film.”

She says even athletic shoes can be recycled.  The DNR has more tips and resourcesfor improving your recycling habits online.
