Menominee Tribe Plans 150-Mile March to Capitol

en.wikipedia.org

Members of the Menominee tribe plan to march to the state capitol from their reservation starting Friday to demand Governor Scott Walker meet with Menominee tribal chairman Gary Besaw.

The tribe wants the governor to reconsider its proposal for a casino in Kenosha.

Governor Scott Walker said last month he wouldn’t approve it, because it might cost the state too much money. A 2005 gaming compact promises to reimburse the Potawatomi tribe for losses that result from nearby gaming competition.

The Menominee tribe's most recent bargaining chip is an offer to pay $220 million toward a new Bucks arena in Milwaukee if the casino is approved.

A rally is planned for 8 am Friday to send off the marchers.

It’s about 150 miles from Keshena to Madison.

Overnight stops are planned in Manawa, Waupaca, Wild Rose, Manella and Pardeeville.

The tribe plans a demonstration at the capitol Wednesday morning, and is sending buses to meet the marchers in Madison.
