ATV Advocate Hopes For VC Referendum Vote

One of the people opposed to having ATV's on Vilas county trails hopes those who feel as she does attend the next Vilas county board meeting in Phelps.

In July, the Vilas county board approved changing it's management plan to allow ATV's into the plan. It was changed to no ATV's by a board in 2004 after an advisory referendum recommended no ATV's on county land. The July meeting at the Arbor Vitae town hall was attended by hundreds, including a large contingent of ATV enthusiasts.

In August, the board is likely to visit whether to make two other changes: whether to all the vehicles on county roads and property.

Sue Drum of Presque Isle says the Vilas board will also consider whether to have an advisory referendum...

.
"....there's going to  be a vote for a referendum at the August 26 meeting of the Vilas county board. The (county board) will be able to vote on just allowing a referendum. There not going to have to table anything. They just have to decide whether to let the people have a voice in this matter..."

Drum says she hopes the discussion involves only residents of Vilas county. She says the board could vote to allow ATV's on county land and roads and also hold an advisory referendum.

The board will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26 at the Phelps School Gym.
