Lt. Gov. Barnes Says Public Can Still Comment On Climate Change

A Governor's Task Force on Climate Change is set to release a report this fall and the chair says public comment is still being accepted.

Last October Governor Tony Evers issued an Executive Order establishing the effort with Lt. Govenor Mandela Barnes as chair. A series of meetings is nearing the final weeks before the release of the report.

"All in all, about a thousand people participated in these listening sessions and have provided input. If you didn't have a chance to make the public hearings, you missed some incredible conversations from people across the state with some very real concerns but also with some very real solutions...."

When Evers made the task force last fall, he said increasingly extreme weather could put at risk state farmers, the tourist industry, wood products and several other business sectors. The order says climate change particularly could affect low-income and people of color communities.

Evers set a goal for the state to produce all carbon-free electricity by 2050. The Environmental Protection Agency says fossil-fuel energy production accounts for the second-largest share of greenhouse gas emissions nationwide.

Krystal Westfahl of the Let's Minocqua Visitors Bureau + Chamber of Commerce is a member of the Task Force.
